DescriptionCharles Bulfinch is a central figure in the history of American architecture. While his genius is evident in a range of projects, the greatest acclaim must be reserved for the superb statehouses he designed for Connecticut and his native Massachusetts. In 1818, Bulfinch arrived in Washington D.C. after having been selected by President James Monroe to succeed Benjamin Latrobe as Architect of the Capitol. With Bulfinch’s vision and direction, restoration resumed on the capitol’s House and Senate wings, which the British army had burned four years earlier. Concurrently, he oversaw construction of the central block with its landmark dome.
