Helmut Newton’s ultra-glossy color photographs merged the
chic excesses of 1970s fashion with film-noir imagery, creating a dramatic glamour
that is tinged with sexual violence. The use of a mannequin rather than a model
in At Yves Saint
Laurent is a Surrealist-inspired moment of comedic horror as the man
nonchalantly severs the mannequin’s hand while lighting his cigarette.
