BiographyGottfried Engelmann (1788-1839) was a Southern Alsatian (later French) lithographer, printer, draftsman and painter, and a precursor of the use of lithographic techniques in France.

The Alsatian born artist and publisher Godfroy Engelmann (also Gottfried Engelmann) is largely responsible for the spread of the art of lithography in France in the early 19th Century.

Toward the end of the Napoleonic Wars, around 1815, Engelmann found himself at the age of 25 at the head of lithographic press in his hometown, Mulhouse. Within a few years, he established a second press in Paris. In addition to his prolific work as an artist and lithographer, Engelmann produced several treatises on the use of lithography and was a innovator in new lithograhic techniques.
