BiographyIn 1880, a small Britannia factory was established adjacent to the glass works by the owners and director of the Mt. Washington Glass Company. Thomas J. Pairpoint (along with fifty workers) left Meriden, Connecticut and was named factory superintendent. Thus the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was born. Mr. Pairpoint was considered to be the foremost silver designer in the country at the time. The company prospered and received favorable attention for its designs. In 1881, a second building doubled the size of the factory. A third building was constructed in 1882, and by 1892 two additional buildings had been built. The apparent success from the start must be credited to the ability of Thomas J. Pairpoint. On July 14, 1894, these two neighbors were joined under the title of The Pairpoint Corporation which continued to operate The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company and the Mt. Washington Glass Company. The combination of New Bedford-made glass and metal ware proved to be a commercial and artistic success.
