BiographyBorn: 1939, San Francisco, CA. Studio: San Francisco, CA. Education: 1961, San Francisco State College, BA. Between 1961 and 1978, he taught sporadically at the San Francisco Art Institute, the University of California at Berkeley, and the California College of Arts and Crafts before becoming a professor of art at Mills College. Awards: 1984-2001, Faculty Research Grant, Mills College; 1998, Visual Artists Award, Flintridge Foundation; 1997, Fellow of the American Craft Council; 1986, NEA Fellowship; 1983, 1981, Mellon Grant; and others. Art: Linked to the so-called Abstract Expressionist Ceramics group around Peter Voulkos, he was particularly influenced by two members of the group, Ken Price and Michael Frimkess. By 1963 having seen an exhibition of the work of Giorgio Morandi at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles he decided to adopt a narrow focus, the cup, and has worked almost exclusively with this domestic icon ever since.Person TypePerson
