Archimede Seguso
Archimede Seguso
Italian, 1909 - 1999
Son of Antonio Seguso (1884-1965). As a glassblower with Vetreria Artistica Barovier e C. (from 1933), he trained under the direction of Napoleone Barovier and his own father Antonio Seguso. Together with Napoleone Barovier and Luigi Olimpo Ferro, he and his father left Vetreria Artistica Barovier & C. (1931) because of a major downsizing there resulting from the difficult economic circumstances of the Great Depression.
With his father Antonio and brother Ernesto, he began (1931) a small glass workshop. In the following year (1932) they were joined by Napoleone Barovier and Luigi Olimpo Ferro. Thereafter, with his father Antonio and brothers Ernesto and Alberto, he co-founded (1933) Artistica Vetreria e Soffieria Barovier Seguso e Ferro with Luigi Olimpo Ferro and Napoleone Barovier. He was Master Glassblower of the new company until he withdrew from it in 1942.
After World War II he began (1945) a new glass workshop, first with Alfredo Barbini and then alone under the name Seguso Archimede. In 1947 he organized the business as Vetreria Archimede Seguso. He was one of the master glassblowers who produced works for Centro Studio Pittori nell'Arte del Vetro di Murano (later known as Fucina degli Angeli). By the end of his long career, Archimede Seguso had become the most celebrated living glassmaker of Murano.
