Rene Portocarrero, considered Cuba's finest modern artist, died today at the age of 73, the state-run press agency Prensa Latina reported.
No cause of death was given, but family members told reporters it was probably related to burns the frail artist suffered in a kitchen accident about a week ago.
Mr. Portocarrero was best known for his abstract portraits of women in tropical settings of flowers, birds and trees. He was also inspired by the people and scenes of old Havana, where he spent much of his life.
