BiographyIn The Annual Journal of the Costume Society of America, DRESS, Volume 27, 2000, Gail Stein's article "Mr. John 'Emperor of Fashion'" states that "Accounts differ as to his age and place of birth. one biography states that Hans Pico harberger and his twin sister, Margarete, were born to Rose and Henry Harberger in Florence, Italy, March 14, 1906. Another account states that Munich or Cologne, Germany, as his birthplace in 1906. His passport lists the year of birth as 1902 with his birthplace in Munich."

According to Tina Llorente: Gail stated that the passport, which is the only primary source, would have required a birth certificate at the time, therefore all LACMA files confirm as of 2/14/02.
