BiographyNicolaes Berchem was one of the most talented and versatile Dutch painters of landscapes in the Italianate manner. His works are typically peopled by peasants driving cattle or travelers gazing on Roman ruins in the light of the evening sun. Dutch Italianate landscapes express the yearning of northerners for the warm light and idyllic life of the south, and were highly prized in the northern Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 17th century they fetched higher prices than native Dutch landscapes.Person TypePerson
