the Renaissance flourished in Europe, an equivalent cultural flowering
manifested itself throughout the temples and courts of Korea, particularly in
the 15th and 16th centuries. Vessels from that time are considered to be among
Korea’s iconic artistic achievements and are now found in museums throughout
the world. Bohnchang Koo traveled thousands of miles to photograph these
vessels, using color photography to enhance both the tonal subtleties as well
as imperfections of the glazed porcelain. The vessels are seen against
pristine, delicately hued pastel fields; Koo has described each of these pieces
as “a soul-embodying vessel, with unlimited capacity to embrace the heart of
its viewer and its potter.”
