DescriptionTrained at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (the “New Bauhaus”) in Chicago, founded by László Moholy-Nagy with an emphasis on experimental art-making, Yasuhiro Ishimoto made this photograph using color film and filters, rewinding the film and re-shooting the subject (here, a building) multiple times on the same negative frame. The result is an abstract image of the skyline he saw from his apartment window in downtown Tokyo. Because he did not know how the final image would appear when printed, his intuition and experience guided the composition. The final image invokes a sense of optical and kinetic wonder in the eyes of a viewer.
