Among a small circle of female photographers who were active and recognized for the high quality of their work at the turn of the century, Eva Watson-Schütze operated a thriving photography studio in Philadelphia. This intimate and affectionate family scene, infused with a soft focus and gentle light and printed on a velvety, matte-surface platinum paper, is a perfect embodiment of Pictorialism, as the most advanced fine art photography of the day was called.
