DescriptionYasuhiro Ishimoto began his journey as a photographer picturing fellow Japanese Americans at an internment camp in Colorado during World War II, after which he moved to Chicago and studied with photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design. During that time, Ishimoto began to photograph on the streets of Chicago. In this untitled photograph, both subject and form embody the instability of urban life: construction and destruction, substance and shadow, reality and representation. Ishimoto’s dynamic photographs of Chicago convey not only the vibrancy of the city but also the anxieties and uncertainties of the Cold War years.
