Jonathan Torgovnik’s series Intended
Consequences depicts Rwandan women with the children they bore after being
raped. An estimated 20,000 children were born from sexual crimes committed
during the genocide in Rwanda. Many of the mothers contracted HIV/AIDS from
these brutal encounters.
During the three
years Torgovnik documented these families and their stories, he learned that
many of the mothers and their children were shunned by both sides of the
Rwandan conflict. Having a child of a militia compounded the mothers’ emotional
suffering. Torgovnik has since co-founded Foundation Rwanda to help raise money
for the children to attend secondary school.
