DescriptionWilliam Guy Wall, an Irish artist who immigrated to America in 1818, gained admiration for his landscape paintings and engravings made after them, particularly those of the Hudson River. Opposite what is today Midtown Manhattan, Weehawken, in New Jersey, was a popular destination for New Yorkers seeking an outing that offered advantageous view of their city. Weehawken received notoriety as the site of the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton on July 11, 1804, that left the latter dead. Weehawken was chosen as the location for the contest to escape New York’s more aggressive prohibition against dueling.
