Description

In her portraits, Gertrude Käsebier was determined to produce “not maps of faces, but pictures of real men and women as they know themselves.” Lucille Thomajon was an Armenian immigrant who had come to the United States at the turn of the 20th century with her husband. Deeply involved in social work, Thomajon was president of many charitable and religious organizations. Käsebier’s portrait honors Thomajon’s commitment to her charitable efforts. Attired in a beautifully embroidered morning gown, Thomajon turns away from her small desk, interrupted in her early morning work, and looking with poised alertness and a slight smile back at the camera.

Provenance[Paul M. Hertzmann, Inc., San Francisco]; purchased by MFAH, 1985.
