DescriptionHis professed goal was to photograph "men of the twentieth century,"
and while the actual scope of the body of photographs he eventually produced
was not that broad, August Sander's portraits do provide a wide-ranging view of
German society during the first decades of this century. Historical in avowed
intent, his photographs identify both the individuality of his subjects and
their unique place within the larger context of humankind. Sander supplies
ample clues to vocation, social status, and standard of living by means of the
environmental portrait technique. Considerations such as style of dress and
physical setting are important elements in his images, whether the portraits
have been made in the studio or on site. Here, three young men, somewhat
self-conscious and dressed in their best attire, saunter at a leisurely pace
through a field. However uniformly described, each man retains his own identity,
from the tilt of his hat to his idiosyncratic stance with cane in hand.
