By breaking commonly held rules of photography and
challenging the limits of narrative, Robert Frank became one of the world’s
most celebrated artists. In Queen’s Coming, London, he
captures the waiting crowd but leaves the approaching monarch out of the frame.
The photograph is alive with anticipation, conveying the uncertain cultural
climate in postwar England.
