DescriptionGregory
Crewdson created this mysterious, whimsical, and somewhat ominous scene
entirely in his studio, using props, models, and backdrops to form a fanciful
suburban neighborhood where animals and insects displaced by new development
quietly lurk in the distance. Equal parts enchanting and unsettling, Crewdson’s
intricately constructed photograph is reminiscent of the dioramas found in
natural history museums, but with an added air of cinematic wonder. Inspired by
films like Steven Spielberg’s E.T.
and David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, where
the otherworldly or dangerous encroach upon tranquil, idyllic suburbs, Crewdson
crafts elaborate, imaginative sets for extraordinary stories that have yet to
unfold.
