DescriptionThe spiral scroll pattern is characteristic of the earliest stonepaste ceramics produced in Iznik. The blue-and-white palette is inspired by imported Chinese porcelain, but the leafy spiral decoration references Ottoman arts of the book. This plate also epitomizes the rich trade between Italy and Türkiye: its shape is inspired by the Italian tondino, identifiable by its semicircular cavetto and wide rim.
ProvenancePrivate collection, Europe; [Oliver Hoare Limited, London, 2007]; purchased by MFAH, 2007.
