creating camera images of his own, Thomas Ruff has long pushed the boundaries
of photography. Each picture in his Substrat series began with a popular
Japanese anime or manga image grabbed off the Internet. Manipulated beyond
recognition, its forms altered and colors heightened, the final abstract image
was ultimately printed with photographic materials at the scale of contemporary
painting, blurring the traditional boundaries of media.
