While employed as a photojournalist for the magazine Cuba Internacional, a monthly picture magazine modeled on the American weekly Life, Iván Cañas necessarily addressed politically determined topics, assigned above all with portraying labor and promoting the image of self-sacrificing workers and a beneficent state. Like others, he was able to fulfill assignments while maintaining a personal vision and perspective on Cuban life, as seen here in his series paying tribute to the aging veterans of the late 19th-century war for independence from Spain.
