Modern and Contemporary ArtObject Type
Spanish painter Juan Gris created
such highly ordered, even mathematical, compositions that the French poet and
critic Guillaume Apollinaire dubbed him the demon of
logic. However, as demonstrated by The White Tablecloth, Gris balances the structural rigor
of his paintings with nuanced chromatic rhythms, giving his compositions a
lustrous palette that mirrors the glowing canvases of such Spanish old masters
as Diego Velázquez and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
