This photograph is part of a larger series in which Boris Mihailov
examines the consequences of the breakdown of the Soviet Union after the
introduction of Perestroika (the political and economic reforms introduced by
Mikhail Gorbachev in June 1987). Here, he photographed those living at the edge
of society in his hometown of Kharkiv, in the Ukraine, to focus on the
disturbing aftermath of the Soviet Union’s decline.
