Description

Raised in a tenement building in the Lower East Side, Rebecca
Lepkoff bought her first camera in 1939 and joined the Photo League in 1945
where she took classes, exhibited her work, and served on various executive
committees. This view, taken from the corner of 51st Street and Fifth Avenue in
front of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, sets well-dressed men and women in the
center of the composition, their long, late-afternoon shadows intermingling
with steam below.

Provenance[Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York]; purchased by Joan Morgenstern, Houston, November 11, 1988; given to MFAH, 2009.
