Description

Karin Szekessy is both a fine art
photographer and a free-lance photojournalist for magazines. In addition, she
is noted for her portraits of artists in which the sitters are depicted with
truthfulness and candor. Szekessy's husband, the painter Paul Wunderlich, is a
convenient and willing subject and often appears in her photographs. There is
an active and continuous working relationship between husband and wife; each credits
the other as a source of inspiration and guidance.

Wunderlich's stylistic influence is
evident in this portrait, photographed in his studio with examples of his own
work on the wall behind him. The illumination only partly reveals and describes
the figures in the photograph, giving them more three-dimensional presence and
solidity than would be achieved by more uniform lighting techniques. Just as Wunderlich's
painted figures seem to emerge from the darkness which surrounds them, the
artist and the child at his side seem to materialize out of the matte blackness
of the photograph.
