With
her Polaroid SX-70, Maripol documented the thriving and eccentric “scene” on
New York’s Lower East Side during the early 1980s. Her Polaroids captured the
budding influences and interactions between artists, performers, musicians,
designers, and scenesters that would mark the post-punk era in New York. The
grid of nine photos presented here as a single inkjet print foreshadows a style
of photography still present in today’s social media and fashion blogs.
These photographs feature Nina Huang, James
White, Ann Carlisle, Glenn O’Brien, Robert Fripp, Madonna, Diego Cortez, Patti
Astor, Deborah Harry, Robert Bayley, Vincent Gallo, and Anya Philips.
