DescriptionA key figure in the vibrant, avant-garde interwar art scene in Czechoslovakia, Jaromír Funke absorbed the influences of Russian constructivism, German “New Vision,” and French Surrealism and formulated his own aesthetic theories and style. These he promulgated through articles, critical reviews, teaching, and the establishment of a succession of influential artist organizations. In works such as this one, Funke pushed “straight” photography to the edge of abstraction through careful setup and lighting, tight framing, and subtle printing.
