this photograph, the Czech poet and collage artist Jiri Kolárˇ pays homage to
photojournalist Werner Bischof, best known for his photo-essays on the devastation
in Europe caused by World War II. Here, Kolárˇ combines two images Bischof made
in Peru just before his untimely death in 1954. By cutting and re-composing the
images, Kolárˇ created what he called a “picture-poem” depicting a small boy
striding over seemingly endless rows of new cars while playing a flute,
offering an ironic comment on economic tensions at the height of the Cold War.
