Constructed studies of intimacy and relationships, Kelli
Connell’s images from the series Double Life
at first appear to capture a young couple sharing private moments. Close examination,
however, reveals that the figures are in fact the same woman. Connell’s model,
Kiba Jacobson, posed and was photographed twice, and Connell then stitched the
images together in Photoshop to form a final, single image. Connell’s invented
scenes search for emotional truths about relationships through pictorial
fiction, acknowledging that identity, sexuality, and gender are themselves
construction.
ProvenanceThe artist, Chicago; purchased by MFAH, 2004.
