phases, and wave patterns, Susan Derges unfolded three large sheets of
photographic paper in the dark at the water’s edge and fired a bank of strobes
just as a small wave broke. Her photographic paper not only recorded the
complex forms and patterns of water, but also the colors of cool ambient
moonlight and warmer streetlights bouncing off the clouds and back to earth.
For Derges, these images, made without a camera, speak of water and light as
essential elements for life.
