circle in 1925, and he soon became celebrated
for his abstract landscapes characterized by
atmospheric vistas populated by enigmatic,
biomorphic figures. With the onset of World
War II in 1939, he fled to New York, where
this canvas was painted. The deliberately
ambiguous title, which can be translated
from the French “comment” as either “what”
or “how,” is in accord with his intuitive working
method. Tanguy stated, “The painting develops
before my eyes, unfolding its surprises as it
progresses. It is this which gives me the sense
of complete liberty.”
