DescriptionA co-founder of Fotoform (with Otto Steinert and Toni Schneiders, among others)—a group of photographers who greatly impacted the development of postwar photography in Germany and abroad—Peter Keetman primarily worked as a freelance advertising photographer in the 1950s and is best-known for his photographic series on the making of Volkswagen Beetle cars. But, true to the Fotoform philosophy, he also embraced the aesthetics of the ‘Subjective Fotographie’ movement, which championed photographic images that often transformed their literal subject for the sake of visual satisfaction. Keetman created images of industrial objects and natural phenomena that invite the viewer to further interpret and reflect on the visual experience of looking at a photograph, as it differs from everyday vision.
