Chris Killip took as his subject the marginalized working
class of Britain’s industrial and mining regions during the 1980s, an era of brutally
hostile economic and cultural change led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Killip
lived among his subjects and brought a profound understanding and empathy to his
powerful portrayals of their lives along with a sophisticated sense of picture
making, something he attributed to the example of Walker Evans and Paul Strand.
