Lisette Model immigrated to the United States from France
in 1937 and worked as a freelance photographer for PM, Harper’s Bazaar, Look, and Ladies Home Journal. Using a handheld, 35mm camera that allowed her
to get up-close and personal with her subjects, Model earned a reputation as one
of the most dynamic street photographers of her era, honestly portraying
average people in everyday situations. In this image, one of her most iconic, a
woman poses as a pinup girl in the Coney Island tides, the frame barely
containing her larger-than-life presence. As a teacher at the New School for Social Research for
more than 30 years, Model inspired a new generation of photographers with her
direct style, most notably Diane Arbus.
