Description

At Kent State University on May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen
opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War and its expansion into
Cambodia, ordered just days earlier by President Nixon. Four students were
killed, and nine wounded. In the moments following the shooting, photojournalism
student John Filo caught the anguished scream, grieving expression, and
disbelief of Mary Ann Vecchio

kneeling over the body of student protester Jeffrey
Miller. The photograph, which circulated worldwide in the press and won a Pulitzer
Prize, came to embody the heartache of a nation at war with itself.
