Description

Félix Teynard, a civil engineer from Grenoble with no artistic training and little technical experience, set off for Egypt in 1852 and returned a year later with 160 astonishing images of its landscape and ancient monuments. At the Roman-era temple at Kalabsha (ancient Talmis), Teynard filled his entire frame with receding planes of carved stonework and a jumble of fallen blocks that together suggest the grandeur of ancient Egypt and the depredations of time.

Provenanceauction of marquis du Bourg de Bozas Chais d'est Ange, Chateau de Prye; Hans P. Kraus Jr., New York; Mayer & Mayer, Stuttgart.

Bought by Manfred Heiting from Mayer & Mayer, Stuttgart on 12/20/1988.
