Cofounder
of the Photo League, the New York–based, left-leaning organization that
championed both photography and the working man, Sid Grossman used his camera
as a tool to illuminate union struggles, rural poverty, and life in Harlem.
Equally, however, in the late 1940s, he captured the unfettered delight of
ordinary New Yorkers at Little Italy’s San Gennaro festival or, as in this
joyous jumble of bodies, soaking in the sun and sociability of Coney Island’s
beach and boardwalk.
