A large portion of the Museum’s collection of photographs
by Ilse Bing consists of self-portraits. These include a handful of early
self-portraits taken in 1934, as well as several made in 1945 with the shutter
release visible in her hand. This self-portrait shot on a New York City rooftop
pushes the boundaries of the genre further, replacing Bing’s image with her
shadow and a lurking dog.
