Stamped on verso of mount and on original backboard (now in Registrar's office object file): "CARBON PRINT / An invention of the 1850s, pigment printing used carbon in the form of lampblack / for making photographic prints of exceptional permanence. Hence the name †carbon / transfer process†, by which these †carbon prints† of superior beauty and permanence are / created. Pigments in many other colors, such as those used by artists, are also extremely durable, and are the choice ingredients for making prints in full-color. In / †tri-color carbon† the image is made of three photographically-obtained reliefs of colored gelatin. These reliefs (cyan, magenta and yellow) are transferred one by one / in registration on top of each other to form one full-color image. Carbon prints are many times more permanent than other photographic prints. However, protection from atmospheric pollution and ultraviolet radiation is recommended. Prints should be placed under glass and should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. / †Caution: Do not pres or drymount this print under a hot press.† [signature] / Subject: Aspen Forest, San Juan N F. Colo. / Date printed: June, 7. 1989 / Print No.: 3/10"
