Brassaï most often photographed the urban landscape and the working class that inhabited it. His bold style embraced extreme contrast between dark and light, infusing everyday subjects with energy and mystery. In this photograph of a festival in Barcelona, a dark dragon puppet is haloed by the smoke it emits. Brassaï places it at the center of the composition, with the crowd of excited onlookers keeping an awed distance from this magical creature.
