Ansel Adams’s images of the West have shaped American ideas about the wilderness and land preservation for more than 70 years. Recalling the images he took of these Aspens on a dim afternoon in 1958, Adams noted, “I do not consider them ‘pretty’ scenes, for they are cool and aloof and rather stately.” He aimed to capture the feeling of stillness in the grove, to bring the viewer into the quiet of that space with him. Adams’s love of nature manifested in both his photography and his tireless advocacy for conservation of the natural world.
