DescriptionGerhard Richter said that he wanted to use photography “not so that it would be a medium for painting, but so that painting would become a medium for photography.” Enlarged here to the scale of painting, the thick swirls and bubbles of paint that had accumulated on the artist’s palette read like the broad painterly gestures of a powerfully emotional Abstract Expressionist canvas and are imbued with a quality of submerged light also seen in the artist’s subsequent Abstract Pictures (Rhombus Cycle), also in the MFAH collection.
