The Clews brothers produced a wide range of patterns, including a group of views known as the State Border series, sometimes called the America and Independence series. The series comprises fourteen views with the central images taken from the publication Marshall’s Select Views, in: Great Britain, &c. published by William Marshall in London from 1825 to 1828. This plate borrows from the copperplate engraving Bear Forest, Ireland found in this publication. It is encircled by the names of fifteen states. Lady Justice is on the left holding a medallion with a portrait of George Washington; Lady Liberty is on the right.
Provenance[Samuel H. Laidacker (1904–1994), Bristol, Pennsylvania]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, May 10, 1959; given to MFAH, by 1966.
