Harry C. Rubincam’s image of the circus walks a tightrope of anticipation and delight. Bustling activity comes from every direction: the billowing fabric top, a teetering star on a charging horse, and busy spectators. Rubincam produced many images of the circus, creating carefully composed stills that express the action under the big top. Perhaps taken at the height of the equestrian act, this photograph conveys expectation and enjoyment, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.
