Provenance[Karl Nierendorf Gallery, New York, after 1937] [1]; [Sale, New York, Parke-Bernet Galleries, “Important Impressionist and Modern Paintings,” 6 April 1967, lot 50, illus. in b/w] [2]; Private collection, United States, possibly 1967, by 1972; [Sale, Sotheby’s, London, “Impressionist and Modern Paintings and Sculpture,” 29 November 1972, lot 40, illus. in color]; purchased by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Beck, Houston, 1972; given to MFAH, 1998.

[1] Karl Nierendorf (Cologne, 1889–New York, 1947), a German banker-turned-art dealer, first opened a gallery in Cologne in 1920 with his brother. Josef Nierendorf (Cologne, 1898–Berlin, 1949) ran the gallery in Berlin when Karl moved to New York, where he opened a branch in January 1937.

[2] This was sold at auction in 1967 and again in 1972, both times by unnamed individuals.
