[1] Walter F. Brown (Breckenridge, Texas, 1930-San Antonio, 2014) and his wife Leonora were important collectors of Asian art and generous donors to the San Antonio Museum of Art.
[2] Correspondence dated October 9, 1986 from Janet L. Brown in San Antonio, Texas, to the auctioneers Ader, Picard, Tajan, indicates the purchaser as noted herein and the date of sale. [MFAH object file-accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.]
[3] Three printed shipping labels for the European transporting company CFTI-SAIMA are affixed to the stretcher. Annotated by hand, each bears one of the following inscriptions: “Walter / New Mexico, USA, and perhaps a shipping number ‘536216.’”
[4] On July 28, 1986, Audrey Jones Beck wrote to Walter F. Brown expressing her interest in the “prices and provenances” of seven paintings in his collection, including the present work. [MFAH object file-accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.]
