DescriptionJean-Marie and Jean-Bartiste Lamothe were members of a silversmithing family who fled the sugar-producing French colony of Sainte-Domingue (now Dominican Republic and Haiti) in the wake of an uprising and revolt of enslaved people that began in 1791. They went first to Cuba. When Cuba expelled the refugees in 1809 and 1810, the Lamothes, like many from Sainte-Domingue, settled in New Orleans.
