DescriptionThis octagonal tray with scroll handles was made in Sunderland, England, and decorated with a deep brown glaze and overlaid with a delicate transfer-printed design in yellow. The design may derive from the boteh motif, a teardrop-shaped motif of Persian origin. The pottery may have applied this motif used on so-called Kashmiri shawls made by the woolen manufacturers of Paisley, Scotland.
Provenance[Jerome W. Blum, Willow Corners Antiques, Lisbon, Connecticut]; purchased by MFAH, 1980.
