As a member of the short-lived yet influential avant-garde photography group Vivo, Eikoh Hosoe was a key figure among the generation of Japanese photographers representing and confronting societal transformation following World War II. Hosoe frequently collaborated with other artists and cultural figures, and this picture portrays the artist and actor Simon Yotsuya, of whom Hosoe made a number of pictures. Hosoe’s photographs of Yotsuya are darkly cinematic, representing the actor’s psychological depth to create enigmatic narratives where inner and outer worlds collide.
